The Barrel Cactus Residence is a 1,150 square foot addition (ADU or Accessory Dwelling Unit) to a single-family home in the suburbs of the San Diego area. At the project’s inception, the clients had relocated from Tucson, Arizona to San Diego, California. They fell in love with the desert landscape of Tucson and wanted to bring it with them to their new residence. After buying a mid-century style house in San Diego, they wanted to add an ADU and re-work the backyard to feature one of their favorite native plants: the barrel cactus. The plan layout of the ADU unfolds across a series of green venetian plaster cactus planters, which provide privacy between the main house and the ADU, as well a

Axis ADU is a 1,200 square foot Accessory Dwelling Unit in Los Angeles, California. With two stories, two bedrooms, and two baths, the ADU serves as an expansive guest house and pool cabana. The design is arranged around a central axis, which fluidly connects the ADU entryway to the pool terrace, giving direct access to the pool lounge and hot tub. A dramatic roofline of Bermuda-inspired concrete roofing materials bookends the central axis and creates a shaded central courtyard. Located on a steep hillside site, the massing of the ADU cascades downward following the slope, creating a series of intricately interconnected interior spaces. The cascading form features a stepped foundation which

Twin Roof ADU is a 750 square foot Accessory Dwelling Unit in Los Angeles, California. The project features a butterfly roof, or a pair of angular roof planes which create tall ceilings for generous interior spaces. The upper floor’s cathedral ceilings dramatically frame the surrounding mountaintop views. The ADU’s footprint is extremely compact, minimizing the impact on the property’s small backyard. The ground floor houses an artist’s studio, where the large sliding glass doors create a fluid connection between the ADU and the backyard. The large sliding glass doors let in a lot of filtered light, creating ideal conditions for an art studio space. Because of the floor plan’s emphasis on e

The Norwich Residence is a 2,500 square foot single-family home near San Francisco, California. The interior design was inspired by the architect’s use of exterior concrete facades. To create a strong indoor/outdoor connection, many of the finishes from the exterior run fluidly into the interior, creating an interior finish palette of concrete, bleached cedar wood, and brushed bronze finishes. A see-through sculptural fireplace, custom designed by Michael Matthews Studio, anchors the interior design of the common areas and creates a continuous flow between living and dining areas.
